Mr. Popper’s Penguins Book: A Children Book Appreciated by All Generation

Mr. Popper’s Penguins book is a children book which is first published in 1938. It was written by Richard and Florence Atwater and illustrated by Robert Lawson. This illustrated children novel has received a lot of positive reviews. It is no wonder that this children book has earned the name of a Newbery Honor Book in 1939.

The Newbery Honor itself is given to the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The next year, Mr. Popper’s Penguins book won the Young Reader’s Choice Award. It was also one of the books in inaugural Lewis Carroll Shelf Award for the year 1958.

What is this book about?

Mr. Popper’s Penguins book tells a story about the life of a poor painter, Mr. Popper, and his family, who live in a small town of Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Mr. Popper loves spending his free time reading about adventures and explorers who travel to many places. When the family tunes in a radio, he comes across a broadcast by a famous explorer, Admiral Perry, whom he later on sends a letter to. The Admiral has read Mr. Popper’s letter and promises that he will send a surprise for Mr. Popper.

Mr. Popper receives a live male penguin from Admiral Perry as his surpirse. He names the penguin Captain Cook. Mr. Popper makes a room in his refrigerator for the penguin to live in.

The penguin grows lonely and Mr. Popper receives a female penguin from a manager of aquarium. When the two penguins meet each other, they quickly bond and soon after there are 10 new family members living with the Poppers.

The Poppers soon run out of money and decide to train the penguins to perform some acts. They have toured across the country and gain a lot of interest. One day, they are being invited to perform in Ney York’s theatre. But the penguins cause trouble which makes Mr. Popper and his penguins thrown to jail.

Admiral Perry bails them out of jail and offers something in return to Mr. Popper. He wants Mr. Popper’s penguins to return to South and start a new colony there.

Just before Mr. Popper gives his answer, the theatre owner comes to the station with a film crews who want Mr. Popper to stay in New York to make movies with his penguins. He agrees to Admiral’s offer and let the film crew take a few clip just before his departure.

Admiral Perry wants Mr. Popper to come with him, which he agrees to go after a talk with his family.
