About a year before the story’s Start, The Empire of Nilfgaard attacks Cintra’s Kingdom. Emhyr var Emreis, Emperor of Nilfgaard, sends his spies to locate her.

He understands that this woman has great significance because of her blood, but also due to her potential and elven blood in her veins.

Almost two decades after the war (won from the Northern Kingdoms), the rulers of the North meet in secret, to explore the political situation.

Peace with Nilfgaard isn’t what it was likely to be. Nilfgaardian financial strength is destroying northern economy, Nilfgaardian emissaries agitate aristocrats and merchants contrary to their monarchs, elves and dwarves have shaped partisan groups known as Scoia’tael (Squirrels) and are running acts of terror against humans – and in each significant city cultists are prophesying that the world will end, unless the Savior comes from the South.

The kings decide also to regain Cintra, and to start a war, before the Empire weakens their countries further. They know that the Emperor is looking for Ciri to wed her (morganatically) and thus to gain the rights to Cintra, that is currently under Nilfgaardian occupation.

To keep this from happening, kill and the monarchs decide to find Ciri.

The woman is being shielded by Geralt of Rivia, a witcher: a magically and genetically mutated monster slayer for hire, who takes her into the witchers’ maintain, Kaer Morhen.

There witchers teaches Ciri, including Coën old Vesemir, Eskel, and Lambert. She learns about monsters and how to combat them. She is taught to fight with a sword in the witcher style.

Throughout her “education”, the sorceress Triss Merigold comes to Kaer Morhen. Geralt had summoned her to assist with occasional strange and odd behavior he’d seen in Ciri.

Triss realises that Ciri is a Source. She acknowledges that she does not have the power and counsels Geralt to swallow his pride and seek support from a more sorceress Yennefer along with his former lover.
At the same time, a wizard called the girl is being looked for by Rience. He is a servant of a mage, whose identity remains unknown.

He catches the friend, Dandelion that the bard of Geralt, and tortures him. Dandelion is rescued by the timely arrival of Yennefer, who participates in a brief duel with Rience.

Rience manages to escape through a portal opened by his master, however, is left with a prominent facial scar from the spell of Yennefer.

On the way, Triss falls sick, and they combine Yarpen Zigrin’s dwarven company who is directing a caravan for King Henselt of Kaedwen.

Geralt informs Ciri about Aelirenn, an elf who died leading elven youths to resist with the people at a attack’s roses.

Ciri’s remain in Ellander is haunted by disturbing dreams until the coming of Yennefer, who starts educating her. From an initial antagonism, their relationship develops into a bond that is deep and strong, such as that of a mother and kid.

Meanwhile, he Geralt does his very best to monitor Rience and his mysterious employer.

Rience’s master intervenes again, starting a portal site for him, and Geralt is prevented from pursuing the mage by Philippa Eilhart, who also kills the final surviving Michelet brother in order to not provide Geralt any source of information which may eventually disclose the mysterious mage. Geralt is left wounded.

Yennefer became the mentor and teacher of Ciri. Since they are about to leave the Temple School in Ellander, Yennefer asks Ciri if she did not like her at first, leading to a succession of flashbacks detailing Ciri’s studies with Yennefer from the day they were introduced and back to the current as they are about to leave the Temple.

Ciri reacts by admitting that she wasn’t liked by her, and they depart.
